Baird reported to be ready to fast track light rail for Strathfield

Light Rail in Sydney

Premier Mike Baird was today reported to be ready to sign off on a $1 billion light rail network linking Parramatta to Strathfield.

The move, supported by Strathfield Council and local MP Jodi McKay as well as a group of prominent businessmen, would be good news for the area, promoting jobs and development.

Ms McKay told Ourstrathfield she was urging the State Government to support the Strathfield Town Centre redevelopment as part of the plan.  "Light rail could be the catalyst for this plan, which links transport to development," she said.

According to the Daily Telegraph this morning, the light rail project would“fuel billions of dollars in housing and job-creating projects along its route, including a $1 billion town centre with shops, restaurants and offices on 5ha in the heart of the Olympic precinct.”

The paper maintains it would ensure the future of the sporting and entertainment facilities on Sydney’s Olympic Park.

The paper quoted  “high-level government sources” for saying the Parramatta to Strathfield route had become the “frontrunner” among the four light-rail routes short-listed last October.

The Telegraph also claimed Mr Baird would make the announcement before the NSW Budget on June 23.

The Telegraph claims the route would link Parramatta with the Australian Turf Club’s Rosehill racing and convention centre, move across the Camellia peninsula to Sydney Olympic Park then on to Strathfield.

It reports a consortium of 20 high-profile businesses, who have formed the West Line Alliance lobby group, convinced senior Treasury and transport bureaucrats to back the Olympic corridor route.

Sydney Business Chamber Western Sydney director David Borger was quoted as saying: “This is a game changer and would also resurrect the Olympic legacy, bringing more activity and energy to the park,’’ he said.

Cr Daniel Bott, who has put up a number of motions urging that the State Government support the Parramatta to Strathfield route, said today: "Strathfield is a destination and as such needs infrastructure like this.

"I have said for some time that what has been called the 'Parramatta to Sydney Olympic Park and Strathfield / Burwood option' is the best option.  This is best option for Strathfield and Sydney as a whole.

Strathfield is the third biggest transport hub in the State, so to have this infrastructure is essential."
