Despite the threat of a downpour, volunteer groups such as the Strathfield Rotary, Girl Guides, councillors and residents turned up as part of Clean Up Australia Day - the nation's largest community event.
But even though the residents and groups managed to clean up Wentworth Street in Greenacre, Mayor Guilian Vaccari said he was disgraced by the amount of building material dumped in the area.
"There is a huge amount of building material dumped in the area and because it is a dark, unlit area, there is a lot of opportunity for people to not be caught," he said.
"I will be proposing in a mayoral minute that council set up some mobile patrol units to survey the area at night."
Cr Vaccari was also joined by the Deputy Mayor, Andrew Soulos.
Residents also got involved by picking up rubbish around Airey Park.
“Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and help clean up our local parks and streets and think about how we can reduce our impact on the environment,” said Cr Vaccari.
“Strathfield is known as a beautiful area, but it is up to us to keep it that way.”
