Police, SES join flood relief

A local policeman, Constable Jon Gayford, has flown to Brisbane to join the massive reconstruction and recovery effort now underway in the Queensland capital.

Const. Gayford has worked with the Flemington Local Area Command for the past three years and has been specially chosen to join 55 other NSW police personnel taking part in Operation Safeguard.

A police spokesperson says the officer is a credit to the police force and was chosen because of his outstanding qualities.

“Const. Gayford was definitely chosen because he is a great officer,” said the spokesperson. “He’ll be spending a week in Brisbane assisting the Queensland police in a time of need.”

Elsewhere, seven members of the Strathfield SES Unit remain on standby to assist with the Queensland flood disaster – the volunteers will get just 24 hours notice before they are deployed.

Other members of the Strathfield community are digging deep to help the victims of the Queensland floods.

Strathfield Council last week made a $10,000 donation to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.

Tony Maroun, the Mayor of Strathfield, is calling on all Strathfield residents, businesses and the wider community to consider
donating to the disaster relief appeal.

In recent days, the Sydney Markets in Flemington also donated $10,000 to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.

Individual donations can be made at www.qld.gov.au/floods or by phoning 1800 219 028. You can also donate in person at any bank.

There will be a bucket collection by Rotary at Movies in The Park on Saturday and another collection at the council’s Australia Day celebrations. Please give generously.
