The pace was so fast and furious that at one point one councillor was left behind as the party raced to their next appointment. Cr Stephanie Kokkolis had to borrow a local council car to catch up to the Strathfield party’s bus.

Protests and petitions over plan to put up statue in memory of comfort women at Strathfield town centre

It was one of the biggest protests seen in Strathfield in years.  And it was all conducted under the watchful eye of the international press.

When councillors were asked to consider a petition against the idea of a statue commemorating Korean, Chinese and Australian "comfort women" used by the Japanese army during the second world war, some 140 Koreans, Chinese, Australian and Japanese protestors turned up to try and influence their decision.

The long-awaited plans may include traditional Korean horticulture, a restaurant, gallery and a cultural centre available to all for community and other events.

Strathfield's Korean community celebrates Lunar Festival. 

Strathfield's Korean community turned out in force for the first big lunar new year event on the town square today - and the event was immediately declared a success.

Strathfield also discovered it had a new star - a real crowd pleaser in the form of Jeremy Yong, the eight-year-old guitar-plucking young finalist of Australia's Got Talent.

He comes from Strathfield and his mum is his manager.

"He has been singing and playing the guitar since he was around six," said Jeremy's mum.

Korean national day flag raising

Strathfield Council celebrated Korea Week with a flag raising ceremony attended by Korean Consul General Mr Jin Soo Kim, Strathfield MP the Hon Charles Casuscelli, Mayor Gulian Vaccari and councillors Sang Ok, Raj Datta and Helen McLucas.

Consul General Kim heralded the Australian Korean 151 year relationship and made particular mention to Sang Ok and his role in representing the Korean community in the Council.

Casuscelli also commended the relationship with reference to his trip in Seoul.

Traditional Korean dance and drum troupe entertain Strathfield audiences

The Strathfield Chamber of Commerce last weekend hosted the Samul-nori dance troupe.

Coming all the way from Korea, the dance troupe performed in a parade through the Strathfield CBD and dazzled audiences in the Town Square with their acrobatic movements. 

Samul-nori use four different instruments, each representing rain, thunder, wind and clouds.
