Local soccer club predicts registration rise in wake of World Cup

The Strathfield Strikers are hoping for a World Cup bonus later this month, after recording a 25 per cent rise in players following the last tournament in 2006.

Despite a registration cut off at May 31 for the current season, the club still expects membership to rise once youngsters feel the excitement of the Cup in South Africa.

“It would be good if the kids could register for this season during the World Cup, but we’re expecting an increased player base for next season,” says Strikers president Joe Jimenez.

ANZ Stadium has high hopes for consideration

As Football Federation Australia (FFA) finalise their bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cups, local focus has turned to the role ANZ Stadium would play in the tournament.

A spokesperson for ANZ Stadium, Kate Jacka, said the ground would host games if FFA's bid was successful.

“FFA has not disclosed which games it would allocate to which venue,” Jacka said, “But we'd certainly like to think we're frontrunners for the final given, among other features, our capacity and configuration.”
