Axe still hangs over Strathfield as Minister confirms he has yet to decide council's fate

The Local Government Minister has still to decide his response to an investigation intro Strathfield Council’s procurement procedures, it has been revealed.

Despite a council submission and claims five other authorities or consultants have endorsed the way Strathfield has dealt with the issue, the minister’s office told the Strathfield Scene the case has not been closed.

“The Minister is considering Strathfield Council’s submission in response to the final 430 investigation report,” a spokesperson told the Scene.

“If the Minister is not satisfied with the Council's response to the recommendations, further action may be required by the Council. The Minister has the authority to order the Council to implement the recommendations, and matters arising from the recommendations, as specified in the order.”

The issue was raised during 12 hours of bruising debate at a series of extraordinary meetings over the past two weeks, during which Mayor Sang Ok was accused of creating procedural changes to demonstrate Srathfield Council is dysfunctional so administrators could be called in.

The council is awaiting the State Government’s response to amalgamation plans, and such a move would be extremely damaging to the authority, which has led the campaign against forced mergers.

Cr Ok has maintains he is trying to implement the changes to protect the council from administrators.

He as said he has contacted the Office of Local Government to seek guidance.

This week, councillors voted to by four votes to two to make a further submission to the Minister’s office, outlining a further tightening of governance procedures.
