“I’ve got some missed calls.... I think it might be other councillors”

As the results of Strathfield Council’s election were finally being loaded onto the NSW Electoral Commission website at lunchtime on Thursday, Andrew Soulos of United Strathfield had a missed call.

It was the first of many.

He polled only around eight per cent of the vote - a respectable showing for a group formed just six weeks ago, though still a small number. But thanks to the way things have fallen, his position is pivotal.

After a nail-biting five day count, Strathfield at last knows its new councillors.  But who controls the council and the identity of the mayor remains a mystery.

The NSW Electoral Commission announced the results at lunchtime Thursday  – with a tally that meant three Liberals, two Labor and two independents had got over the line.

Gulian Vaccari, Sang Ok and Stephanie Kokkolis will form the Liberal team, with Raj Datta and Daniel Bott for Labor.

Independents running for council elections put their weight behind single issues

Single issues are the driving force behind independent candidates running for a place on Strathfield Council.

In the 2008 Council elections, around 20 independent candidates ran for a place. The incumbent Mayor Cr Paul Barron and resident Danny Lim (who was later forced to resign in disgrace) were the only two independents to win seats.
